Bachelor of Music

Prescreening:

  • The exposition or equivalent of the first movement of any major viola concerto.
  • The prelude of any solo suite or first movement of any sonata or partita by Bach.

Final Audition:

  • The complete first movement of any major viola concerto.
  • Two contrasting movements of any solo suite, sonata, or partita by Bach.

Undergraduate Application Checklist

Prescreening:

  • One complete movement of a standard concerto, such as the Bartok, Hindemith, or Walton.
  • Two contrasting movements of any solo suite, sonata, or partita by Bach.

Final Audition:

  • One complete movement of a standard concerto.
  • Two contrasting movements from any solo suite, sonata, or partita by Bach.
  • The first movement of any major sonata.

Doctor of Musical Arts

Prescreening:

The applicant must submit their prescreening online, and it must contain 45 to 60 minutes of music representing different styles and historical periods. If reviewed favorably, the applicant will be invited to campus. Candidates should plan to be on campus for the entire day.

Final Audition:

If invited to campus, the applicant will perform for, and interview with, a music faculty jury. Candidates are expected to prepare 60 minutes of music appropriate for the doctoral level. Selections should represent various styles and historical periods from the standard repertoire. The audition will last approximately 30 minutes. The applicant should perform selections used in the prescreening, but can also bring additional repertoire. Candidates should print the list of prepared audition selections and bring this to the audition.

Northwestern University is based in the town of Evanston, Illinois, 12 miles north of downtown Chicago. Evanston is a bustling college town with lots of artisan boutiques, restaurants, and shops.

Downtown Chicago, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera, can easily be accessed by car or via the CTA Purple and Red Line "L" Trains, and the north shore has lots to offer as well.
